Marquise obelisk
A dark, faceted object filmed hovering above forest leaf litter, from a 2014 YouTube upload titled "Obelisk UFO was filmed hovering in the forest — Location and date unknown"; whether it shows the same alleged object Jonathan Reed reported is undetermined. Non-free; used for identification and commentary.
At least one, and possibly two, alleged instances of a low, dark, horizontally-oriented, diamond-shaped hovering object have entered the record under the name marquise obelisk — "the obelisk" to both of the people who separately report having encountered one. The first is "a large black thing we call the obelisk," in the words of Jonathan Reed's co-author Robert Raith — "the craft looks like a marquise diamond" — that Reed, a contactee, reported finding motionless above the forest floor near Snoqualmie Pass, Washington, in October 1996, measuring roughly eight or nine feet long, four feet wide, and two and a half feet high — wider and longer than it is tall. The second is a broadly similar dark, faceted shape, hovering low above leaf litter in a wooded setting, captured in a silent video anonymously uploaded to YouTube in May 2014 under a closely matching title, "Obelisk UFO." Reed himself came to doubt it was a vehicle at all, describing it instead as "a doorway, a portal," anchored in two places at once and, in a nightmare he recounts in the days afterward, "the black wedge... looming high above me insurmountable and alive" — elsewhere stated flatly as "a living thing, a pseudo-entity, an artificial life-form." — the marquise obelisk is, on Reed and Raith's account, a piece of recovered non-human technology: an exotic device serving as a communication link between a non-human intelligent being and some external source, and, on Reed's own later reflection, possibly "a living thing" with "a consciousness all its own" rather than inert hardware. Were the account accurate, it would describe a compact non-human artifact encountered at close range on foot in ordinary terrain — small enough to escape general notice, yet reportedly capable of disorienting nearby observers and disabling camera equipment — a different kind of evidentiary claim from the large aerial craft that dominate most UFO reporting. No further alleged instance beyond these two has been substantiated.
Descriptions of the object's precise geometry vary in their vocabulary but agree on a rigid, stone-hard, horizontally-lying diamond profile. Reed calls it "six sided" and "almost a diamond shape"; Raith calls it "a marquise diamond"; Reed separately describes the surface as hard "like granite, like polished marble" rather than metallic. This composite description is broadly consistent with what solid geometry terms a pentagonal bipyramid — two five-sided pyramids joined base to base, which would present from most angles as a faceted, six-to-ten-sided diamond lying on its side — though Reed's own "six sided" count does not exactly match the ten triangular faces such a solid would have, and no source describes the object in those specific geometric terms. The 2014 video's close-up frames likewise show a solid, faceted, tent- or wedge-like shape rather than a flat card or a rounded lens — consistent with, though not confirming, the same reading — but the footage's resolution does not permit a reliable facet count either.
Reed reported the object roughly 150–250 ft from the site of the forest encounter in which he says a non-human intelligent being he called "Freddie" killed his dog Suzy. He could not move the object — it "would not budge" when he tried — and never witnessed it leave the scene. He described its surface as cold "like dry ice" — the cold reportedly tore skin from his palm on contact — and hard "like polished marble," bearing four engraved symbols that, in Raith's account, no one had identified. He photographed and filmed it at the scene — the basis of the surviving photographic record and the forest video's obelisk footage — and reported that proximity caused nausea, camera malfunction, and a "strange invasion of thoughts" — a telepathic-seeming intrusion he associated with the entity's own apparent communication. In the book, Reed recounts a nightmare in the days afterward featuring "the visage of the black wedge; the Obelisk looming high above me insurmountable and alive," and separately describes wondering whether it was "a probe or a living thing, with a consciousness all its own"; asked directly by Raith to explain the idea, Reed answered that the object was "in a way a living thing, a pseudo-entity, an artificial life-form," attributing the impression to insight gained through his contact with it rather than to any external examination. The object itself, its alleged companion piece the Link bracelet, and the disputed authenticity of the surviving evidence are treated at length in Obelisk (Jonathan Reed).

| Alleged instance | Reported by | Location | Date | Evidentiary record |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Obelisk (Jonathan Reed) | Jonathan Reed; co-author Robert Raith | near Snoqualmie Pass, Washington | 15 October 1996 | photographs, video footage |
| 2014 forest video | anonymous uploader ("spider79821edu")[3] | unstated | uploaded 2 May 2014; filming date unstated | single silent video, no chain of custody |
The second alleged instance is a 37.8-second, silent video titled "Obelisk UFO was filmed hovering in the forest — Location and date unknown," uploaded to YouTube by a channel using the handle "spider79821edu" on 2 May 2014. The clip carries the on-screen, Portuguese-language credit "Invasores Alienígenas" ("Alien Invaders"), suggesting it circulated through a compilation or reposting channel rather than originating with the uploader; no location, filming date, or witness account accompanies it, and the uploader is not otherwise identified. The footage opens on a wide shot of a dark, rhombus-shaped object hovering motionless a short distance above a forest path, then — after a brief scan-line video artifact and a black frame consistent with an edited splice rather than a single unbroken take — cuts to a series of close-up shots showing a dark, faceted, low, wedge-like shape resting or hovering just above leaf litter, filmed from several angles as the camera moves around it. In the final several seconds the object's silhouette progressively shrinks and recedes from frame before the last shots show only forest ground cover with no object visible.
