Five observables

The five observables are a five-item classificatory scheme — anti-gravity lift, sudden acceleration, hypersonic flight without a heat signature, low observability, and trans-medium travel — that Luis Elizondo says AATIP investigators used internally to flag a reported case of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) as inconsistent with any known human technology, rather than treating every anomalous report as such by default. Elizondo says the program's investigators approached each encounter under a working assumption that it was man-made, applying the five observables only where the sensor and witness record held up against that assumption. A separate account, from the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies's 2019 analysis of the Nimitz "Tic Tac" case, attributes the same five-item framework to the physicist Hal Puthoff and colleagues rather than to AATIP's own staff.

The scheme functions as a threshold rather than a description: a case that exhibits all five is treated, within AATIP's own methodology, as functionally beyond dispute as advanced human technology, and analysts and investigators elsewhere in the field have adopted it as a shorthand standard for calling a UAP report genuinely anomalous. Elizondo has called the 2004 Nimitz UAP incident one of the program's "gold standard" cases precisely because it registered against the full set, and the classification underlies the broader effort, treated at UAP propulsion research, to infer a drive mechanism from flight envelope alone.

Definition

Internally, AATIP is said to have codified the following five performance characteristics as the definitive set of aerodynamic anomalies inconsistent with any known human technology:

Luis Elizondo's 2024 memoir Imminent adds an unpublicized sixth item circulated within the same programs but not part of the public five-item list — biological effects, covering radiation burns and internal organ damage, with two AAWSAP/AATIP-era colleagues reportedly under medical care for cutaneous and visceral injuries following UAP encounters, especially close approaches to reported orbs.

Application to cases

Analysts across the field have applied the five observables well beyond AATIP's own casework. Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart described Scott Bray and Ron Moultrie's 2022 congressional testimony as displaying the scheme in full — "hypersonic velocity," "instantaneous velocity," trans-medium operation, low observability, and "positive lift" — and treated the admission as among the most significant official acknowledgments of the phenomenon yet made. The classification has also been applied outside any single case: reported black-triangle sightings are said to exhibit flight characteristics "consistent with five observables reported for UAP generally," including instantaneous acceleration from a slow hover and an absence of visible propulsion exhaust. The trans-medium travel item specifically has been treated as its own formal UAP classification criterion by AATIP and its successor, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), and is used to group sightings such as those catalogued in the List of sightings of transmedium UFOs.

The evidentiary weight the field gives the classification is disputed at the circumstance of its origin rather than at the flight data each case reports. The five observables were fixed internally by AATIP staff working from sensor and witness material that nobody outside the program has been able to independently re-examine, and the science writer Mick West has said that public release and confirmation of AATIP's underlying studies could change the picture, but that "so far" no such evidence of anything new to science exists. On that reading, a case's fit to the five observables is a record of an unusual set of measurements rather than of demonstrated new physics — a doubt about what the classification is evidence of, not about whether the underlying sensor readings occurred.
