Roswell vehicle occupants
The Roswell vehicle occupants were the alleged extraterrestrial non-human intelligent beings — most recovered dead, and at least one recovered alive — reportedly retrieved from the Roswell craft during the Roswell incident of July 1947, in what Roswell researchers Tom Carey and Donald Schmitt described as the first occasion "where creatures from another world were first seen by creatures from Earth." According to multiple witness accounts documented by researchers investigating the Roswell craft retrieval operation, at least five and possibly six occupants were allegedly recovered from three separate crash sites during the concealment of non-human intelligent beings operation coordinated by the 509th Bomb Group.
The remains were autopsied at Walter Reed Army Hospital and other military medical facilities, where pathologists reportedly documented a profoundly non-human internal anatomy. At least one entity, however, allegedly survived the crash and entered prolonged US government custody, where it was designated EBE (extraterrestrial biological entity) and reportedly held — in most accounts at Los Alamos — until its death in the early 1950s; this surviving being is catalogued separately as EBE-1. Estimates of the number of occupants vary from four to as many as eight, and accounts differ over how many craft came down, where, and what brought them down.
The recovered occupants are known chiefly through the testimony of military personnel, medical staff, and civilian witnesses — much of it gathered by crash-retrieval researchers decades after 1947 — together with a small body of contested documents, and no bodies or autopsy records have entered the public domain; the account is accordingly received with incredulity outside the exopolitics and crash-retrieval community.[citation needed] Prosaic and terrestrial-origin readings of the reported remains — competing explanations for the same debris and bodies — are treated separately at Roswell incident.
Recovery and distribution across crash sites

Roswell craft retrieval operation
The occupants were allegedly distributed across three locations: two beings thrown from the Roswell craft during the initial explosion and recovered at the Dee Proctor body site approximately two and a half miles east of the main debris field; and three additional occupants found with the inner cabin section that allegedly continued flying another 30–35 miles before impact at the final crash site closer to Roswell. The three-site reconstruction developed by Carey and Schmitt allocates the occupants accordingly, suggesting that the craft was carrying at least five beings at the time of the alleged lightning strike that caused the explosion over the Foster Ranch. According to Carey's research, one of the three occupants found at the final impact site was allegedly recovered alive and ambulatory, indicating that at least one being survived the crash sequence long enough to be taken into custody by military personnel implementing the Roswell cover-up.
The bodies were found at or near the crash site north of Roswell in early July 1947 and recovered during the Roswell craft retrieval operation. Glenn Dennis, a mortician at the Ballard Funeral Home, was contacted by the base mortuary officer requesting child-sized hermetically sealed caskets and embalming advice for bodies that had been exposed to the elements. Archaeological-expedition testimony documented by Schmitt describes the occupants as "three small bodies with large heads" discovered by a team from Texas Tech University led by Professor W. Curry Holden at an impact site approximately 40 miles north of Roswell. Sergeant Melvin Brown of "K" Squadron, while on guard duty at the crash site, reportedly observed three bodies under a tarp covering an ambulance truck that had arrived from the base, despite orders not to look. The use of ambulance trucks to transport the occupants suggests that military authorities treated the beings as requiring medical handling — consistent either with some occupants surviving the crash or with the preservation of biological material for analysis.
The remains were initially processed at the Roswell Army Air Field base hospital before being flown to Wright Field and subsequently to Walter Reed. At least one body was observed in transit at Fort Riley, Kansas, by then-Major Philip Corso, suspended in a thick light-blue preservative gel inside a glass-enclosed shipping crate.
Competing crash and vehicle accounts

Roswell incident
Researchers do not agree on how many craft came down near Roswell, where they came down, or what brought them down, and the number and disposition of the occupants varies with each reconstruction. Across the reconstructions, the shared elements are that something exotic broke up over the high desert of central New Mexico in the first week of July 1947, scattering anomalous debris across one field on the Foster Ranch and leaving bodies at a separate location nearby.
In the single-craft reading favoured by Carey and Schmitt, one disc — destabilised by a lightning strike during a monsoon thunderstorm — shed its outer skin over the Foster Ranch debris field, threw two occupants onto the Dee Proctor body site about two and a half miles to the east, and carried the remaining occupants in its inner cabin a further 30–35 miles before final impact north of Roswell. Stanton Friedman and Don Berliner instead argued for two distinct vehicles, placing a debris-and-body site at the Foster Ranch and a separate, more intact craft on the Plains of San Agustin roughly 150 miles to the west, with as many as eight beings recovered across the two crashes — three dead and perhaps one alive at each site. The intermediate Carey–Schmitt position holds the body site and the debris field to be products of a single airburst, while other investigators have proposed that more than one vehicle was involved and brought down together; the westward second-craft locations are difficult to reconcile with the southeast-to-northwest trajectory reported by military witnesses, and the competing reconstructions remain unresolved.
The cause of the crash is likewise contested. Most accounts attribute it to the thunderstorm, with witnesses describing an explosion "different from thunder," while others hold that the wreck was induced by the dense radar coverage protecting the region's weapons-testing facilities. Philip Corso theorized that high-powered radar interfered with the craft's propulsion — the same mechanism he later applied to the 1948 Aztec UFO crash eight months afterward. Former presidential advisor Harald Malmgren went further, relating that "the CIA and Atomic Energy Commission got the very idea of shooting down UFOs with directed energy from an extraterrestrial being that survived the Roswell crash in 1947" — implying the recovery itself seeded a deliberate downing capability.
The Roswell occupants are frequently read as the first in a sequence of southwestern crash retrievals rather than an isolated case. Researcher Andrew Kissner reported that sources within the White Sands Proving Ground and the Naval Research Lab indicated that two to four discs were recovered across 1947 and 1948 and analyzed at Los Alamos and Sandia under Atomic Energy Commission control. The later 1953 Kingman UFO crash reportedly produced its own surviving beings — the J-Rods — one of whom was likewise housed at Los Alamos; because both the Roswell EBE and the Kingman J-Rod are described as Grey survivors held at Los Alamos, the two are sometimes conflated, though the J-Rod lineage is attributed specifically to the 1953 Kingman event.
Physical description
Witnesses described the occupants as small in stature, with disproportionately large heads and unusual eyes, though the descriptions diverge enough to suggest at least two physiologically distinct types.
Stature and build
The beings measured approximately 3.5 to 4.5 feet in height and weighed roughly 40 pounds. Lt. Gov. Joseph Montoya, who encountered the beings in a hangar at Roswell AAF, described them as "short, only coming up to my chest" and "so skinny that they didn't look human." Corso described the body he saw at Fort Riley as "a four-foot human shaped figure with arms... thin legs and feet."
Head and face
The head was disproportionately large relative to the body — "by human standards, large when compared with the size of the torso and limbs," as the Stringfield composite profile summarized it. Corso described the skull as "an oversized incandescent lightbulb shaped head," with all facial features "arranged absolutely frontally, occupying only a small circle on the lower part of the head." The nose was minimal — "mostly nostril" — and the mouth "a tiny flat slit... resembling more of a crease or indentation." Montoya described the mouth as "real small, like a knife-cut across a piece of wood." No ear lobes or protruding flesh were present, only auditory apertures on each side of the head. No hair was observed on any of the bodies.
Eyes
Eye descriptions varied, reflecting a possible distinction between types. Corso described "oversized and almond shaped" eye sockets "pointed down to its tiny nose," with no visible pupils or iris. Montoya described eyes "shaped like tear-drops" that were "larger than normal." The Stringfield composite described them "variously as large, almond-shaped, elongated, sunken or deep set, far apart, slightly slanted, appearing 'Oriental' or 'Mongoloid.'" The nurse at Roswell AAF, as relayed by Dennis, said "the eyes were set pretty deep."
Hands
Each hand had four fingers and no thumb. The Dennis nurse described the digits as "tentacle"-like with "suction cups on their fingertips" and no fingernails. A slight webbing between the fingers was noted by multiple sources.
Skin and garment
Skin color was described variously as pale gray, pale white, "yellowish, a bit Asian-looking," and "beige, tan, brown, or tannish or pinkish gray." Corso noted that the skin also resembled "a very thin one-piece head-to-toe fabric covering the creature's flesh," making it difficult to distinguish skin from garment. The beings wore a tight-fitting, metallic, one-piece flight suit.
Number of occupants recovered
Estimates of the total number of occupants recovered vary by source, in part because the dead and the living were dispersed across more than one site. Hal Puthoff told Luis Elizondo that four deceased non-human bodies were recovered from the 1947 Roswell crash. Stanton Friedman estimated that as many as eight beings may have been recovered across the two crash sites — up to four from the Foster Ranch debris field and four from the Plains of San Agustin site. The Dennis nurse described three bodies, "two of them just mangled beyond everything, but there was one of them that was really in pretty good condition." Montoya saw four, of which one was alive and moaning. Capt. Oliver "Pappy" Henderson's daughter recalled him saying "there were three bodies." Corso described approximately five at the crash site, including one alive on a stretcher and one that attempted to flee and was shot.
The surviving entities

EBE-1
Crash-site survivors
When the first Counter Intelligence Corps convoy from the 509th Bomb Group reached the crash site northwest of Roswell, multiple figures were found on the ground near the wreckage. One was alive, struggling and projecting a sensation of distress — "a crying sound that echoed not in the air but in his brain" — that CIC officer Steve Arnold perceived as telepathic rather than auditory. A second figure attempted to climb over a sand rise before nervous soldiers opened fire and killed it before officers could intervene.
At least one living entity was still restrained to a stretcher and moving when observed by civilian firefighter Dan Dwyer, who was brought to the site and passed it at close range before being removed from the scene. Back at Roswell Army Air Field, civilian plumbing contractor Roy Danzer witnessed stretcher-bearers carrying at least one being through the base hospital entrance, describing a living figure "in its final moments of life," communicating pain and suffering not through speech but through "a sensation crossing behind his eyes and across his brain."
Custody and communication
The surviving entity was designated EBE — short for extraterrestrial biological entity, a name reportedly suggested by Vannevar Bush — and is catalogued individually as EBE-1, the first formally recorded entity of its kind. According to William Cooper, the being "had a tendency to lie and for over a year would give only the desired answer to questions asked," while questions that would have produced undesirable answers "went unanswered"; in the second year of captivity EBE began to open up, and the resulting information "became the foundation of what would later be called the Yellow Book." Government scientists initially communicated with EBE using pictographs.
A separate witness account described a surviving being that communicated telepathically "in perfect English," mirroring the accent of whoever had previously interviewed it — when an agent covered his ears to test whether the communication was auditory or mental, he found it was entirely telepathic. When asked why it could not simply disappear as other beings apparently could, the entity reportedly replied that it was "locked in" to its biological form and could no longer "go back to a spirit," adding: "When we're all through with the jobs that we have to do, we will be killed."
General Nathan Twining presented the situation to President Truman at a September 1947 briefing, describing the beings as "too human" — physiologically similar enough to humans that they had to be "related to our species in some way," and capable of thought-projection communication "unlike any mental telepathy you'd see at a carnival show."
According to Cooper, in late 1951 EBE became ill; its system was reportedly "chlorophyll based" and it "processed food into energy much the same as plants." Medical doctors, botanists, and entomologists were brought in, and a botanist named Guillermo Mendoza worked to save EBE until its death on June 2, 1952. Michael Wolf, who described EBE as a Grey held "from 1948 until his death," instead placed the death in 1953.
Survivors in later custody
Steven Greer has described an Army intelligence officer — reportedly the last person to see a Roswell survivor alive — who handled and observed one of the living beings, held in a crate and wearing boxer shorts, at Camp Peary, the top-secret CIA facility near Williamsburg, Virginia, around 1950–51, indicating that at least one survivor remained alive in US custody for roughly four years after the crash.
A separate account attaches a surviving Grey being to the later 1953 Kingman UFO crash: of three beings reportedly recovered there, one — a J-Rod — was taken to Los Alamos, the same facility most often named in the EBE-1 custody accounts, and a third to S-4. The shared elements of a Grey survivor held at Los Alamos lead the Roswell and Kingman survivors to be conflated in some accounts, although the J-Rod is attributed specifically to the 1953 event and EBE-1 to the 1947 Roswell recovery.
In an account he gave decades later, Corso described a separate 1957 encounter with a Grey-type being at Red Canyon near White Sands Missile Range.[citation needed]
Directed-energy weapons connection
Harald Malmgren, a former presidential advisor who held all Q clearances and blanket nuclear-weapons clearance, recounted before his death in 2025 that the US government's concept for shooting down anomalous craft with directed energy weapons allegedly originated directly from the surviving Roswell being, telling his daughter Pippa on his deathbed that "the CIA and Atomic Energy Commission got the very idea of shooting down UFOs with directed energy from an extraterrestrial being that survived the Roswell crash in 1947." Malmgren stated that the being was "apparently the sole survivor of that crash" and that later in his career he personally "saw the video of this creature being interviewed." CIA Deputy Director Richard Bissell, who founded Area 51 in 1955, was "likely well aware of this interview of the surviving being at Roswell" and personally briefed Malmgren on aspects of the program.
According to Malmgren, the concept from the surviving being led to the Bluegill Triple Prime nuclear test in October 1962, which reportedly demonstrated X-ray-based directed energy capable of destroying both incoming missiles and any "tag-along" anomalous craft in the vicinity. The Bluegill tests subsequently inspired physicist Edward Teller's X-ray-based Excalibur designs, which formed the basis of Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative — the network of directed-energy weapons and satellite tracking popularly known as "Star Wars."
Autopsy findings
Autopsies were conducted at Walter Reed Army Hospital and Bethesda Naval Hospital. The Walter Reed pathology reports, as summarized by Corso, and the Stringfield composite drawn from medical sources both described a profoundly non-human internal anatomy.
The body contained no digestive system, no gastrointestinal tract, no intestinal or alimentary canal, and no rectal area. No food was found aboard the recovered craft. No apparent reproductive organs or genitalia were present.
The circulatory fluid was a colorless liquid without red blood cells or lymphocytes and was not a carrier of oxygen. Corso described the fluid as "thin, milky, almost lymphatic-like," noting that the blood system and lymphatic system appeared to have been combined into a single system.
The heart and lungs were proportionally larger than in humans. The heart appeared to function as both a pumping muscle and a passive blood-storage facility, and did not work like a four-chambered human heart. Walter Reed pathologists hypothesized that the creature's very slow metabolism allowed it to travel great distances in a shorter biological time than humans. The lungs appeared to store atmosphere in a manner analogous to a camel's humps.
The brain was proportionally oversized and had four distinct sections or "spheres." The skull itself was soft and spongy, "more like palatal cartilage than the hard bone of a human cranium." Skeletal tissue was fibrous and thinner than comparable human bone, but more flexible, leading pathologists to speculate the frame functioned as a shock-absorption system.
The skin's texture was described as "scaly or reptilian" and "stretchable, elastic or mobile over smooth muscle or skeletal tissue," with no striated muscle, no perspiration, and no body odor. Under magnification, the tissue appeared mesh-like, resembling the granular texture of iguana or chameleon skin. The inner skin layer was completely permeable, as if constantly exchanging chemicals with the combined blood/lymphatic system, which Walter Reed analysts believed may have been the mechanism by which the creatures nourished themselves.
Two physiological types
Witness descriptions cluster into two distinct morphological categories, a pattern recognized in both the Stringfield research program and the Linda Moulton Howe classification framework.
Type I — a taller, more humanoid being with an Oriental or Asian appearance — was described by the Dennis nurse as looking "like ancient Chinese: small, fragile," with deep-set eyes and elongated upper arms. Sgt. Melvin Brown's daughter Beverly reported that the bodies "looked yellowish, a bit Asian-looking" with "slanted eyes" and appeared "almost as though they would be friendly if they were alive." Capt. Oliver "Pappy" Henderson's daughter described them as "small and pale, with slanted eyes and large heads" and "humanoid-looking, but different from us." Howe classified this morphology as EBE Type I and noted the "Oriental appearance" as a distinguishing feature.
Type II — a smaller, gray-skinned being with large featureless dark eyes, corresponding to the classic Grey alien morphology — was the type observed by Corso at Fort Riley: pale gray, with an "oversized incandescent lightbulb shape head," large almond-shaped eyes with no visible pupils, and four fingers without thumbs. Montoya's description — "pale white," "big eyes shaped like tear-drops," "mouth... like a knife-cut" — also maps to this type. Howe classified this morphology as EBE Type II and reported that government insiders described them as possible "biological androids created by another more advanced intelligence to do work on this planet."
The Stringfield composite encompassed both types, acknowledging that "descriptive variations of anatomy might be no more diverse than those known among Earth's Homo sapiens."
Clone and biological-android hypothesis
The beings have been read not as naturally evolved organisms but as engineered entities. To most observers, the Roswell humanoids appeared "'formed out of a mold,' or share identical facial characteristics." Stringfield himself noted that "the absence of sexual organs suggests that some of the aliens, and perhaps all, do not reproduce as do the Homo sapiens. Perhaps some of the bodies studied are produced by a system of cloning or other unknown means."
Corso, drawing on the Walter Reed autopsy files, wrote: "Perhaps we should consider the EBEs as described in the medical autopsy reports humanoid robots rather than life forms, specifically engineered for long distance travel through space or time." He noted that the absence of any digestive or waste-processing system, combined with the skin's plant-like permeability, suggested the entities were "not actual life forms, only a kind of robot or android." The beings appeared to have been "specifically engineered" for their environment through genetic modification analogous to how human long-distance runners develop enlarged hearts and lungs.
Government sources in Howe's framework described the Type II beings as biological androids — "like bellhops... they come to take you where you're supposed to go and then they bring you back" — manufactured by the Type I intelligence.
SOM1-01 formal classification
The Special Operations Manual 1-01 (SOM1-01), dated April 1954 and classified TOP SECRET/MAJIC EYES ONLY, titled "Extraterrestrial Entities and Technology Recovery and Disposal," formalizes the two-type distinction observed by field witnesses into an official military classification. Section 10 of the manual, "Description of Extraterrestrial Biological Entities (EBEs)," states: "Examination of remains recovered from wreckage of UFOBs indicates that Extraterrestrial Biological Entities may be classified into two distinct categories."
EBE Type I — humanoid, 5 ft to 5 ft 4 in, 80–100 lbs. Pale chalky-yellow skin, thick and slightly pebbled. Small, wide-set, almond-shaped eyes with brownish-black irises and very large pupils. Thin and long nose, mouth wider than in humans and nearly lipless. No apparent facial hair and very little body hair. Four long digits, no opposable thumb; the outside digit jointed so as to be nearly opposable. Legs slightly but noticeably bowed, feet proportionally large. "Might be mistaken for human beings of the Oriental race if seen from a distance."
EBE Type II — 3 ft 5 in to 4 ft 2 in, 25–50 lbs. Cranium much larger and elongated than humans or Type I. Very large eyes, slanted, nearly wrapping around the side of the skull; black with no whites showing. No noticeable brow ridge; a slight peak runs over the crown of the skull. Nose consists of two small slits above a slit-like mouth. No external ears. Pale bluish-gray skin, somewhat darker on the back, very smooth and fine-celled. No hair on face or body; "these creatures do not appear to be mammalian." Arms long in proportion to the legs; three long tapering fingers and a thumb nearly as long as the fingers. Feet small and narrow, four toes joined with a membrane.
The manual states: "It is not definitely known where either type of creature originated, but it seems certain that they did not evolve on earth. It is further evident, although not certain, that they may have originated on two different planets." The SOM1-01 manual's provenance has been extensively investigated; an investigator located the original physical copy in La Crosse, Wisconsin, through the Quillin Pharmacy chain of custody and reported that "the paper and ACCO binder looked old," though the owner refused to release a page for forensic analysis. A "UFOB Guide" dated 15 March 1955 was independently discovered in Air Force Historical Research Center records at Maxwell AFB with text identical to the guide included in SOM1-01. Clifford Stone, who served on crash retrieval teams for twenty-two years, described a field manual cataloguing fifty-seven distinct species types encountered by the military.
