The MH370 UFO hypothesis is the claim that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared on 8 March 2014 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, was intercepted and teleported by advanced military technology. The hypothesis was popularized after the re-publication of the “MH370” videos, supposedly of MQ-9 drone footage of the aircraft's final pre-warp-transit moments near the Nicobar Islands with what have been described as plasma-field orbs consistent with a wormhole or quantum teleportation event, in 2023 and is associated with the online community MH370x and researcher Ashton Forbes. The disappearance of MH370 remains officially unsolved; no primary wreckage has been recovered, and the official Australian Transport Safety Bureau search of the southern Indian Ocean failed to locate the aircraft.

Background: the disappearance

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport on 7 March 2014 (UTC) carrying 239 passengers and crew, including 20 employees of Freescale Semiconductor with expertise in semiconductor and gallium nitride chip technology. Approximately 40 minutes into the flight, over the South China Sea, the aircraft's transponder was disabled and civilian radar contact was lost. Malaysian military radar subsequently tracked the aircraft as it reversed course and flew back westward over the Malay Peninsula, passing near Penang before continuing northwest through the Strait of Malacca toward the Andaman Sea and the Nicobar Islands. An eyewitness named Catherine T. reported seeing a large low-flying aircraft with an orange glow and dark trailing smoke in the Nicobar Islands area before it vanished from view. The aircraft was never officially found. The Malaysian and Australian governments concluded on the basis of Inmarsat satellite handshake data that the aircraft flew south into the Indian Ocean and crashed, but no primary wreckage has been located despite the most expensive ocean-floor search in history.

The Forbes hypothesis: quantum teleportation by hidden military technology

Ashton Forbes, the principal proponent of the UFO-related hypothesis, argues that what occurred near the Nicobar Islands was not a crash but a deliberate clandestine operation using classified U.S. military technology. His analysis centres on two leaked videos he identifies as footage taken by Gorgon Stare wide-area motion imagery sensors aboard MQ-9 Reaper drones — one drone positioned above the aircraft, one positioned beside it — both equipped with targeting pods including a LITENING G4 pod by Northrop Grumman. The videos purport to show three luminous spherical objects manoeuvring around the Boeing 777 before a flash event in which the aircraft vanishes from the frame.

Forbes identifies the spheres as magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) drones — plasma-field generating craft producing quantum entanglement effects across the surrounding volume — and the flash as a wormhole transit event consistent with theoretical work by physicist John G. Cramer on retro-causal EPR experiments. In this model the aircraft was displaced into what Forbes calls "counter space" or "true vacuum" — a state outside normal spacetime — and re-emerged at a different location, with the destination governed by the position of a fourth entangled orb acting as a receiver anchor.

Forbes attributes the operation to the CIA, acting to prevent the Freescale Semiconductor engineers from transferring semiconductor lithography or gallium nitride chip technology to China. He notes that a report in the China Times the day after the disappearance described an intercepted communication between the U.S. Navy and the MH370 pilot at 02:43 Malaysian time — corresponding to 18:43 UTC, precisely when the aircraft would have been over the Nicobar Islands. He further cites reports from 19 family members who stated that their relatives' phones continued to ring after the flight's supposed disappearance — evidence consistent with the passengers surviving at Diego Garcia — a circumstance Forbes argues is impossible if the plane sank in the ocean, and consistent with the passengers having survived at an undisclosed location.

Forbes explicitly does not claim NHI involvement in the event itself, framing the technology as black-budget human military capability derived from understanding of quantum mechanics. He argues the technology has been concealed for approximately 80 years and that public disclosure of quantum teleportation, free energy, and related capabilities has been systematically suppressed.

Remote viewing investigation

Remote viewers Daz Smith and Edward Riordan of the Future Forecasting Group (formerly Crypto Viewing) conducted a blind remote viewing session tasked against MH370 as a mystery target, several months before the Forbes videos gained wide public attention. Viewers Dick, Nam, Riordan, and Smith — all working blind with no knowledge of the target — independently described vehicles in the air, a high-energy or flash event, and debris falling. Smith's session anchor was an impression of debris falling into ocean, and a ship searching for it; Daz Smith noted "something sparkly" in the sky above and described the event as "esoteric in nature."

Smith also reported a session element involving patent holders on the aircraft as a target of interest — consistent with the widely discussed claim regarding the Freescale Semiconductor engineers. Smith further described a dual-mechanism: both a missile or projectile launched at the plane and an onboard notable element, with the sense that "if the missile didn't hit, this thing was going to be taken down one way or another."

Smith noted that upon encountering the Forbes videos after the session, he observed that they resembled what his viewers had described, and also connected them to the Bermuda Triangle material documented in a declassified report attributed to Pat Price — which described an energy phenomenon consistent with an aircraft vanishing in a flash over open ocean.

Criticism and debunking efforts

Mick West, a prominent debunker of UFO and conspiracy claims, concluded that the leaked MH370 videos are fabricated, citing a match between the explosion effect in the video and a 1990s stock footage clip, and identifying the cloud background as images from a publicly available online photography database — both claimed to predate the 2014 disappearance. West additionally cited geometric inconsistencies in the smoke or contrail elements, which he argued move independently of the aircraft when the footage is stabilised.

Forbes has responded to each of these debunks in detail. He argues that the identification of the footage as Gorgon Stare wide-area motion imagery — confirmed to him by a source claiming work at the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station — itself refutes the stock-footage interpretation, since Gorgon Stare imagery is not satellite video but composite drone footage processed by Sierra Nevada Corporation ground systems. On the cloud photos specifically, Forbes showed via Wayback Machine analysis that the supposedly pre-existing cloud image set first appeared on the relevant textures website on October 25, 2014 — more than five months after the videos had already been circulating — and was uploaded as an isolated folder inconsistent with the surrounding image collection.

Ross Coulthart, a NewsNation UAP journalist, cited the cloud-photo match as evidence the footage was fabricated; Forbes challenged him publicly after the Gorgon Stare identification was made, arguing that Coulthart's sources had failed to identify the footage type and that Coulthart declined to address the rebuttal. Youtuber Professor Dave (David Farina), a science communicator who had previously focused on flat-earth debunking, also publicly criticised Forbes and the MH370 videos.
