Philip Wood was an American passenger aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 on 8 March 2014, employed as an executive with IBM or Lenovo. After the disappearance of the flight, a message posted to the anonymous imageboard 4chan — attributed by its author to Wood — claimed he was alive and held captive at a U.S. military installation, attaching a black photograph whose embedded EXIF data, when analyzed, yielded GPS coordinates near Diego Garcia.

The 4chan post

The post, attributed to Wood, described being drugged while aboard MH370, subsequently being held captive against his will, and having concealed a phone on his person — the implied explanation for why the photograph appears entirely black. The message also explained the choice of 4chan as a posting venue: Wood or his supporters reasoned that anonymous imageboards, unlike mainstream social media, could not be pressured to remove the content and would not censor a claim that implicated a government operation.

The GPS coordinates embedded in the image's EXIF data pointed to a location near the Diego Garcia military base — consistent with the hypothesis that the aircraft had been redirected there following its disappearance from civilian radar. Researcher Ashton Forbes notes that the person who debunked the photograph is the same individual who attempted to debunk the leaked MH370 surveillance videos, and that an independent technical analysis found the debunk of the photograph to be factually incorrect — the image is consistent with an authentic iPhone 5 photograph, even if that does not prove it was taken by Wood.

Fate

Forbes speculates that Wood, as one of the few Western passengers who would have had media access to publicize what happened, may have been placed in a CIA black site or offered a witness-protection arrangement rather than killed — the logic being that the U.S. government's interests were better served by containing him than by creating a high-profile American casualty who might attract investigative attention. Within the broader discussion of the 586 discussion, this is framed alongside the observation that no family members of MH370 passengers have contacted Forbes despite his garnering tens of millions of views, which Forbes and his interlocutor interpret as consistent with family members having been silenced by payment, threat, or both.
