Linda Moulton Howe

American journalist

Linda Moulton Howe (born January 20, 1942) is an American investigative journalist and Regional Emmy award-winning documentary film maker, best known for her work as a ufologist and advocate of various theories of non-human intelligent involvement in terrestrial affairs, including investigations of cattle mutilations, UAP, and alleged government collaboration with extraterrestrials. Founder of Earthfiles, she has spent over four decades reporting on government secrecy regarding non-human intelligences, testifying at the 2013 Citizen Hearing on Disclosure that "the intent of the American government's official policy of denial since 1947...has been the intent to block truth."

Early life

Howe was born Linda Ann Moulton in Boise, Idaho. Howe entered the 1963 Miss Boise pageant for college scholarships and went on to win the 1963 Miss Idaho crown and scholarships, and participated in the Miss America 1964 pageant that year in Atlantic City. Howe received her 1965 B.A. cum laude in English Literature from the University of Colorado. In 1966, Howe was awarded the Stanley Baubaire Scholarship for her master's degree work at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. She received her master's degree in communication from Stanford University in 1968, where she produced a documentary film for the Stanford Medical Center and her Master's Thesis, "A Picture Calculus," at the Stanford Linear Accelerator.[citation needed]

Early career and A Strange Harvest

Howe's early work focused on environmental issues. From 1978 to 1983, Howe was director of special projects at KMGH-TV, Channel 7, Denver, Colorado. Her documentaries included Poison in the Wind and A Sun Kissed Poison which compared smog pollution in Los Angeles and Denver, Fire In The Water about hydrogen as an alternative energy source to fossil fuels, and A Radioactive Water about uranium contamination of public drinking water in a Denver suburb. Howe was on staff at WCVB-TV when the station won an Institutional Peabody Award for institutional excellence in 1975.

In September 1979, prompted in part by correspondence from Apollo 17 astronaut and then-Senator Harrison H. Schmitt, who had requested DOJ and FBI investigation of animal mutilations, she launched a nine-month investigation that became the 1980 documentary A Strange Harvest — an examination of bloodless, trackless cattle mutilations across Colorado and neighboring states which suggested the wounds were the work of extraterrestrial beings who harvest body parts required for their survival or research, and that the U.S. government was complicit. The documentary received a Regional Emmy award for Audio Achievement in 1981 and brought the phenomenon to national attention. Howe became known as a "staunch advocate" for these ideas, and began to focus on UFO conspiracy theories and speculate about alleged connections between cattle mutilations, UFOs and supposed government conspiracies, saying "I am convinced that one or more alien intelligences are affecting this planet". Although Howe claimed she was shown secret documents after being taken into confidence by an agent of the government, author John Greer wrote that Howe presented no evidence for such claims other than "the very ambiguous evidence provided by rotting cow carcasses".

One Idaho state director of Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) called her "the most preeminent UFO investigator in the world", and she was named as one of "the gurus of American ufology", although Howe has said she regards herself as a television producer and investigative reporter. Much of Howe's work includes investigations into what she terms "unexplained" phenomena, such as cattle mutilations, crop circles, UFO sightings, and alien abductions.

AFOSI disinformation (1983)

Following an HBO contract for a follow-up documentary titled UFOs: The ET Factor, Howe was invited to Kirtland Air Force Base on April 9, 1983, by AFOSI agent Richard Doty, who showed her a document titled "Briefing Paper for the President of the United States of America" — a document she was permitted to read but not copy. The paper described UFO crashes, alien bodies, and a surviving alien. The document was a disinformation operation intended to derail her HBO project; the HBO contract was canceled. The incident is detailed in the documentary Mirage Men as an example of COINTELPRO-style UFO disinformation.

Television and media career

Howe has produced numerous UFO related programming, including a two-hour special Earth Mysteries: Alien Life Forms in association with WATL-Fox, Atlanta, and was supervising producer and original concept creator for UFO Report: Sightings financed by Paramount Studios and the Fox network in Los Angeles that was first broadcast in October 1991 and became the Sightings series on Fox.

Howe appeared on a panel at UFO Disclosure press event held at the National Press Club in 2013, saying she believed "alien technology appears so advanced" that "space and time could be bent by outer space travelers, therefore allowing extraterrestrials to visit Earth".

Howe has proposed that some photographs of crop circles show evidence of mysterious energy she terms "visible light phenomena". Joe Nickell described Howe as a "credulous journalist" in a 2002 article in Skeptical Inquirer magazine, saying that photos Howe published purporting to show mysterious energy are simply misinterpretations of photographic accidents, such as a camera's wrist strap reflecting the flash, or circular artifacts caused by floating dust, errors that Nickell calls "the stock-in-trade of ghost hunters".

Howe was a frequent guest on Coast to Coast AM for years, dating back to 2003 with George Noory, and 1991 with Art Bell. In 2019, she ended her monthly appearances on the show. Howe has been interviewed on Larry King Live specials, CNN; The O'Reilly Factor, Fox; Sightings and Strange Universe, Fox; NBC's The Other Side; Britain's Union Pictures, ITN and BBC; The Discovery Channel special Evidence On Earth; the NBC network special, Mysterious Origins of Man; the documentary Mirage Men; and the History Channel television series Ancient Aliens.

Howe remains active as the host of a weekly broadcast on YouTube that dates back to 2007.

Meta-material analysis

In the 1990s, Art Bell received a fragment of alleged alien material in the mail and entrusted it to Howe, who distributed pieces to scientists including Hal Puthoff and Eric Davis. Analysis found ultra-thin layered bismuth, magnesium, and titanium in configurations not reproducible by then-known manufacturing techniques, speculated to function as a waveguide for terahertz electromagnetic frequencies.

In January 2019, Howe published testimony from two Navy SEAL special operators about a 2003 mission to a 62-acre octagonal structure near Beardmore Glacier, Antarctica, built of a pure black material bearing hieroglyphs.

Beginning in approximately 2002, Howe investigated the account of Dan Burisch, a microbiologist who claimed to have worked at S-4 with an extraterrestrial biological entity designated "J-Rod." She published a multi-part report on the case at Earthfiles, interviewed Burisch's mother Dodie Crain, and later appeared with Burisch on George Noory's Coast to Coast AM in February 2006.

Earthfiles

Howe founded and edits Earthfiles (earthfiles.com), which archives approximately 3,000 investigative reports and is her primary ongoing platform. She also appeared in the documentary series Area 51: Alien Disclosure by Ron Garner (Stargate Productions), which investigated the Dan Burisch case and the Project Aquarius classification system — the broad "Black Ops" term for all government UFO-related programs.

Roswell skip site investigation

In October 2019, Howe traveled to the Roswell desert with Giorgio Tsoukalos to investigate what she terms the "skip site" — a location where, according to witnesses, one of three UFOs observed in July 1947 first struck the ground before being propelled back into the air and coming to rest at a second location. Howe was contacted by geologist and earth science professor Frank Kimble, who had spent a decade scanning the area with infrared technology and metal detectors and recovered more than a dozen metal fragments. When Kimble displayed the fragments — including a magnesium-zinc alloy piece with distinct micro-banding — Howe described holding "something made by another intelligence from someplace we don't understand." Kimble stated that the layered banding on Howe's meta-material fragment matched the banding visible in photomicrographs of fragments he had independently recovered from the skip site: "Being an earth scientist, being a geologist, I've seen lots of all kinds of materials that are out there. I have never, ever seen anything like this."

Other investigations

Howe has investigated early contactee and researcher Albert Bender, who shut down his publication Space Review after receiving what he described as a visit from entities warning him to cease his research. She has also analyzed the Rendlesham Forest incident binary code message decoded by Jim Penniston, speculating whether the "origin year 8100" reference suggested time travelers rather than contemporary extraterrestrials.

Personal life

Linda Moulton Howe's father was Chet Moulton, Idaho's Director of Aeronautics from 1946 to 1971 and recipient of multiple aviation honors.
