Hitchhiker effect

The hitchhiker effect or hitchhiker phenomenon is a term used to describe the reported phenomenon whereby individuals who have had close encounters with unidentified aerial phenomena — or who have investigated such encounters in an official capacity — subsequently experience anomalous events in their own lives and households that they cannot explain by conventional means. The term is attributed to Jay Stratton, a senior intelligence official involved in UAP program management, and was independently referenced by multiple former government personnel as a recognised but poorly understood feature of sustained UAP investigation.

Origin and use

The term was coined by Jay Stratton of the Defense Intelligence Agency, who headed UAP-related investigations at the government level. James Lacatski, the DIA program manager who launched the AAWSAP effort and later co-authored Skinwalkers at the Pentagon, warned incoming investigators that the UAP portfolio was a "sticky portfolio" — a warning that only later became intelligible to those who experienced the hitchhiker effect themselves. Luis Elizondo, former director of the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), described being given this warning at the beginning of his involvement and only retrospectively understanding its meaning:

Yeah, sticky portfolio. And I understand what does that mean? Sticky portfolio. And only realizing later they were referring to this hitchhiker effect that a lot of people that were involved in this effort with the government would experience strange, weird things and phenomena, encounters, you know, as for me. You know, I can't explain it so I don't really expound on it very much because I don't know what it means frankly.

Relationship to witnesses

The hitchhiker effect has also been reported by UAP witnesses themselves — not only by investigators. In discussing whether pilots or other close-encounter witnesses experienced the effect, he referenced an unnamed senior individual within the government program who experienced anomalous events following their own UAP exposure, describing the effect as extending to family members: "once you have one of these encounters, there's this 'Hitchhiker Effect,' and now all of a sudden, all sorts of weird things start happening to you and your family." The variable — whether effects are tied to proximity to the craft, duration of exposure, or some other factor — remained unidentified as of 2024.

Relationship to high-strangeness programs

The hitchhiker effect is closely associated with the research conducted at Skinwalker Ranch and documented in the AAWSAP program, where investigators and on-site personnel reported anomalous activity that appeared to follow them off the property. Colm Kelleher and George Knapp described in Hunt for the Skinwalker cases in which the phenomena appeared to attach to individuals rather than simply to a physical location. The hitchhiker effect concept generalises this observation from a single location to UAP encounters broadly. The BAASS program's research into "biological effects" on UAP witnesses — part of the official AAWSAP mandate — included documentation of cases where witnesses reported persistent anomalous phenomena following their initial encounters.
