Limited hangout (UFO disclosure)
A limited hangout, in the context of UFO disclosure, is an intelligence strategy in which authorities — when their veil of secrecy can no longer be maintained — release partial truths about unidentified aerial phenomena and extraterrestrial life while still concealing the most damaging facts. Within UFO cover-up research, the technique is identified as the deep state and Majestic 12 group's alleged primary contingency plan for managing disclosure — releasing just enough to satisfy the public while steering attention toward a dead end. Steven Greer and others read the 1996–97 release of the Alien interview video as an early limited hangout of exactly this kind — a pro-disclosure faction wielding the footage to bargain, through the threat of disclosure, over the lucrative exotic-technology trade rather than to lift the veil, leaving the anti-disclosure majority to dismiss the film as a hoax and concede only a controlled fragment.[citation needed]

The MJ-12 founding documents, as briefed to President-elect Eisenhower in November 1952, reportedly stated that "imposition of the strictest security precautions should continue without interruption" because revealing "the motives and ultimate intentions of these visitors" risked "public panic" — establishing the logic that has governed limited-hangout disclosures ever since.
Layered deception structure
A layered deception structure underlies limited hangouts, captured in the dictum: "the lie is different at every level."
