Marrs also notes that a critical semantic error underlies the entire conventional account of ancient civilization: the Sumerian word for the relationship between humans and the Anunnaki was not "worship" but avod — "work." "Ancient and biblical man did not 'worship' his god; he worked for him." This reframe, from spiritual relationship to labour relationship, reconstitutes the entire framework of ancient religion as an administrative record of servitude — precisely what the ancient astronaut theory requires.

Göbekli Tepe and the transfer of technology

The 2021 discovery of large-scale megalithic construction predating conventional civilization at Göbekli Tepe — 11,600 years old, built by hunter-gatherer populations — fundamentally disrupted the standard Mesopotamia-first timeline and opened mainstream archaeology to the question Hancock had pressed for decades. Hancock interpreted it as evidence not of spontaneous invention but of transmitted knowledge: "I actually don't think that this was something that was just dreamed up overnight by a group of hunter gatherers. I think I'm looking at a transfer of technology.
