UAP propulsion
UAP propulsion is the means by which the craft observed as unidentified aerial phenomena are moved — a class of mechanisms that must, on the evidence of radar tracks, infrared video and the reports of trained aircrew, deliver hypersonic flight without a sonic boom, silent hovering at low altitude, effectively instantaneous acceleration, right-angle turns at speed, and passage between air, water and space without pause or structural change. The subject is defined from the outside in. None of the craft has been publicly recovered, so what the term names is not a described machine but a propulsion system reconstructed from its flight envelope; the broader engineering category of unconventional propulsion, including the human-built and reverse-engineered strands, is treated at Exotic propulsion.
No one commands the whole of the problem, and the work on it is spread across physicists, aerospace engineers, patent-holding inventors, intelligence officers and independent researchers who reach it by different routes: among many others, Hal Puthoff, whose spacetime metric-engineering framework sets the observed effects against the predictions of Einstein's field equations and reports a "hand-in-glove match"; Salvatore Pais, whose United States Navy patents claim inertial mass reduction by a vibrating charged hull; Jack Sarfatti, who argues a craft bending spacetime rides in its own inertial frame and so feels none of the accelerations that would liquefy a crew; Eric Davis and David Chester on the wormhole, warp and quantum-gravity approaches; the intelligence officer David Grusch, who likens the motion to riding a wave in the metric; and the NASA aerospace engineer Larry Lemke, who takes Puthoff's quantum-vacuum work as the most plausible account of a craft crossing the atmosphere in silence. They are a representative sample of the field, not its authorities.
What is unsettled is whether these are rival descriptions of one thing. Metric engineering, inertial-mass reduction, electrogravitics in the Biefeld–Brown lineage, and the extraction of usable energy from the quantum vacuum are advanced by some as distinct engineering routes and read by others as facets of a single manipulation of the vacuum, from which propulsion, mass reduction and power all follow together.
Were any of these mechanisms real and in hand, the consequence would not be a better aircraft but the end of reaction propulsion as the basis of flight and of spaceflight, with the same physics implying gravity control and, through the metric, transit that is not limited in the way distance now limits it. Doubt attaches on two axes. On how the physics could be known, every candidate mechanism is fitted to observations of objects nobody outside a classified compartment claims to have handled, and the claims that such craft have been recovered and studied rest on testimony whose access cannot be independently checked. On the substance, the historical demonstrations offered for electrogravitic thrust have been attributed by Martin Tajmar and others, in vacuum-chamber replication, to ion wind and corona discharge rather than to any coupling between electromagnetism and gravity; the negative energy densities a warp or wormhole geometry would require have never been produced in the quantities needed; and Pais's patents have been widely read as a deliberate bluff or as disinformation, a framing he rejects.[citation needed]
The five observables
The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) codified five performance characteristics — the "five observables" — as the definitive set of aerodynamic anomalies consistently documented in credible UAP reports and inconsistent with any known human technology:
- Anti-gravity lift: sustained flight without any visible propulsion, rotor wash, lift surface, or exhaust
- Sudden acceleration: instantaneous velocity changes that would require thousands of G-forces under Newtonian mechanics, with no structural failure of the craft and no biological distress to occupants
- Hypersonic flight without signatures: velocities above Mach 5 with no sonic boom, plasma sheath, or aerodynamic heating
- Low observability: intermittent radar cross-section, no IR exhaust plume, no visual heat distortion, apparent active jamming
- Trans-medium travel: operation in air, water, and space without structural modification or transition drag
The Nimitz UFO encounter (2004) provided the most extensively documented case for all five: Fravor's visual confirmation of anti-gravity hover; the Princeton radar's two-week record of instantaneous altitude transitions; the FLIR1 video's absence of IR exhaust; radar jamming by the craft; and the white-water disturbance suggesting trans-medium operation.
Inertial mass reduction
The US Navy filed patent US10144532B2 — "Craft Using an Inertial Mass Reduction Device" — by inventor Salvatore Cezar Pais in 2016, published 2018. The patent claims that high-frequency vibration of an electrically charged outer resonant cavity wall, combined with microwave emitters operating at 300 MHz–300 GHz, creates a local polarized vacuum outside the craft. This polarized vacuum state effectively reduces the craft's inertial mass — the resistance of an object to acceleration — allowing extreme velocity changes with proportionally reduced energy expenditure and without the G-force loads that would kill conventional pilots.
Physicist Jack Sarfatti explained: "If you're bending space-time, then you're going to be in your own isolated bucket and you're not going to be feeling those inertia changes... gravity is a field. Gravity is affecting the atoms of your body all at the same time. It doesn't pull on your head and then here — it's a field pulling all in the same direction. So if you're moving gravity, you're not going to be feeling that inertia changes."
Grusch space-time surfing analogy
Intelligence officer David Grusch has speculated that the distinctive patterns of UAP movement — apparent jumps and rapid direction changes — are consistent with a craft riding a wave in the space-time metric, analogous to surfing a tsunami wave across space-time. He has also noted that the blue-shifted radiation reported in UAP proximity cases is consistent with relativistic lensing of visible light around a craft creating a space-time bubble, producing ionizing ultraviolet radiation as visible-band light is blue-shifted.
Observed anomalous characteristics
Documented UAP cases, including USG-confirmed incidents such as the 2004 Nimitz UFO incident, describe craft exhibiting:
- Hypersonic velocities (Mach 10 and above) without detectable sonic booms or turbulent wakes
- Instantaneous directional changes inconsistent with conventional inertial constraints
- Silent low-altitude hovering without visible means of thrust
- Apparent disappearance or dimensional transition in place rather than by acceleration
- Localized electromagnetic effects — frequency shifts, instrument interference — in the vicinity of the craft
Mass reduction was identified by Jones as the second mechanism by which occupants could survive extreme G-forces: "If you were able to reduce the mass of an object, then moving it through the air would be much more seamless, reducing air friction."
Spacetime metric engineering
Physicist Hal Puthoff developed a spacetime metric engineering framework that applies Einstein's general relativity equations to catalogue and explain these anomalous UAP flight characteristics. Puthoff catalogued the observed effects on one side of a paper, then derived what Einstein's equations would predict if spacetime were being locally engineered — finding a "hand-in-glove match" between the predictions and the observations.
Polarizable vacuum approach
In a related framework published in peer-reviewed physics journals, Puthoff treats the vacuum as a dielectric medium whose permeability (μ) and permittivity (ε) values are not fixed constants but can in principle be manipulated. Because the speed of light equals one over the square root of μ times ε, engineering those values would alter the local value of c and thereby modify every general-relativistic effect in that region — potentially producing the silent hypersonic turns and apparent mass reduction observed in UAP.
Zero-point energy and quantum vacuum propulsion
Puthoff also developed theoretical frameworks linking zero-point energy and quantum vacuum physics to potential propulsion. He argued that empty space is permeated by quantum fluctuations whose aggregate energy density is — according to standard quantum field theory — some 120 orders of magnitude greater than other cosmological constraints would allow, and that if these fluctuations could be de-randomized and coherently accessed, the vacuum could function as a propulsion energy source.
Building on Andrei Sakharov's conjecture that gravity is a manifestation of the vacuum field, Puthoff worked with colleagues including researchers from Lockheed Martin to model inertia as an electromagnetic interaction with quantum vacuum fluctuations — with implications for antigravity propulsion.
NASA aerospace engineer Larry Lemke, speaking at the Sol Forum of the Sol Foundation, described Puthoff's zero-point energy work as the most plausible physical explanation for the observed behaviour of certain UAP — specifically their capacity to transit the atmosphere without generating sonic booms, turbulent wakes, or audible noise.
Vector and scalar potential propulsion
Puthoff holds two patents on engineering applications of vector and scalar electromagnetic potentials — fields that exert quantum phase-shift effects on charged particles even in the absence of detectable electric or magnetic fields — and has started a company built around these approaches as of 2024.
Electrogravitics
The Biefeld–Brown effect — an apparent thrust produced by a highly charged asymmetric capacitor, discovered by Thomas Townsend Brown — is considered by some researchers to represent an early empirical demonstration of electrogravitic propulsion. The effect is acknowledged as a physics anomaly pointing either toward gravitational shielding or toward zero-point energy effects consistent with Puthoff's quantum vacuum research. AAWSAP technical papers
When efforts to negotiate access to recovered materials held by aerospace contractors were rebuffed during the AAWSAP/BAASS programme (c. 2009–2012), Puthoff commissioned 38 technical papers from leading subject-matter experts across advanced propulsion, wormhole physics, warp drive, dark energy, and extra dimensions — framed as a 2050 technology forecast, without disclosing the UAP context to contributors. The papers were posted to the classified JWICS server and later substantially released through Freedom of Information Act requests.
Recovered materials
Analysis of recovered alleged UAP materials has contributed to theoretical propulsion models. A layered bismuth and magnesium sample — purportedly associated with the Roswell incident — was analyzed and found to function as a micro-scale waveguide at terahertz frequencies, reducing the effective size of a microwave carrier to approximately one-thirtieth of its standard wavelength. Puthoff described this property as having no established application in conventional materials science at the time.
