Kewper
Kewper (pseudonym; also referred to as Stein or Anonymous) is a former US Army Signal Corps cryptography instructor who was allegedly recruited into the CIA in 1958. He is known for claiming that in August 1958, President Eisenhower sent him and his CIA station chief supervisor to S-4 at Area 51 to verify the existence of non-human intelligent beings and recovered craft held under MJ-12 control. The pseudonym "Kewper" was assigned by investigative journalist Linda Moulton Howe to protect his identity; Stargate Productions (filmmaker Ron Garner) separately used the pseudonym "Stein."
Background
Kewper was drafted into the US Army in 1958 and assigned to a Signal Corps training center in the eastern United States, where he completed courses in radio teletype and cryptography. He finished third in his class and was retained as a cryptography instructor. His commanding officer, who was simultaneously the CIA station chief for the eastern United States, offered him a dual role; after a six-week background investigation, Kewper received a Top Secret White House Q clearance and a CIA identification card issued under an alias.
His initial CIA assignment involved examining classified UFO reports routed from Fort Belvoir that were considered genuine, as opposed to the fabricated cases in the public-facing Project Blue Book. He and his boss were later reassigned to Washington to brief President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon on the UFO situation, after MJ-12 had refused to report to the President.
He took a secrecy oath barring him from discussing any information for 40 years, and the most sensitive material for 50 years (expiring in 2010).
1958 S-4 visit
Kewper's 1958 visit to S-4 is the central event of his testimony. The trip — to the facility at Papoose Mountain, approximately 13 miles south of Area 51 — was carried out in August 1958 by Kewper and his superior officer (the CIA station chief for the eastern United States) on direct orders from President Eisenhower. The purpose of the mission was to determine whether MJ-12 was holding a live non-human being and recovered craft, and to deliver Eisenhower's ultimatum demanding that the base's controllers report to him in Washington.
Origins of the mission
In 1958, MJ-12 had informed President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon that the federal government had no jurisdiction over operations at Area 51 and S-4. Eisenhower, a former five-star general, responded by ordering Kewper and his CIA station chief boss to fly to the facility, deliver a personal message demanding the base commanders report to Washington within the week, and investigate what was being held there. Eisenhower threatened to send the 1st Army from Colorado to seize the base if they refused.
Arrival at S-4
Kewper and his boss flew to an air base in Nevada, then transferred to a commuter plane to Area 51, and were transported approximately 13 to 15 miles south to S-4 by bus. A colonel was in charge of the facility; two senior personnel were absent, attending an annual meeting at Bohemian Grove in California. Kewper's party included five CIA colleagues, one of whom had been working on western United States projects.
Kewper delivered Eisenhower's message to the colonel, warning that the president would send troops to take the base. The colonel then proceeded to show them the facility.
Craft in the hangars
The S-4 hangars were built into the mountainside with garage-style door openings. Kewper observed multiple craft stored in the bays:
- The first hangar held the Roswell craft, which was damaged from the crash. It resembled heavy aluminum foil and weighed only an estimated 150 to 300 pounds. The colonel said they had been unable to reverse-engineer the propulsion system because the entire craft was integrated with a guidance system linked to the occupants' uniforms; without active alien operators, it would not function.
- The second hangar contained a German Haunebu craft, which Kewper's boss recognized from wartime intelligence. The Germans had developed a reverse-gravitational power plant based on mathematical equations channeled through a medium associated with the Vril, Black Sun, or Thule Society.
- Additional hangars held various disc-shaped and triangular craft.
Kewper took a 3x5 card from a storage area containing the mathematical formula for reversing gravity.
Autopsy film
The colonel screened an autopsy film showing the dissection of a non-human being. The Roswell crash occupants did not resemble the typical grey type; they looked "just like an eight year old boy" with proportional eyes, ears, and nose. The autopsy footage revealed unusual brain structures described as "branch brains" and non-standard internal organs.
Live being encounter
After viewing the autopsy film, the colonel led the group approximately half a block to a separate building where a live grey-type being was being held and interviewed. The room was sealed with elevated oxygen levels matching the being's homeworld atmosphere; visitors could not enter the interview room and instead observed through a window.
The being sat behind a table and appeared slightly oriental in features, with a head slightly larger than a human's, very small ears (described as holes), a very small mouth, and non-human skin tone. The being was self-sustaining, producing a tallow-like substance beneath the skin that served as nutrition.
Kewper's boss and two other agents entered the room to conduct a partial interview; Kewper remained on the other side of the glass. Kewper asked the being, "Are you a demon?" The entity appeared insulted by the question.
Telepathic communication
The being communicated telepathically, projecting thoughts directly into individual minds; each person in the room could hear the being's voice in their head. One agent covered his ears to test whether the communication was auditory; it was not. The being spoke in perfect English with a Southern accent, having apparently picked up the dialect from a previous interviewer.
When asked how long it had been held there, the being refused to answer. When asked why it could not disappear like the being President Truman had previously interviewed, the entity replied that it was "locked into" humanoid form and could no longer return to a spirit state; it stated that when its tasks were complete, "we will be killed," describing itself and others like it as disposable units.
The purpose of showing the being to Kewper and his boss was so they could confirm to Eisenhower that a live alien was indeed being held at S-4.
Briefing in Washington
After departing S-4, Kewper and his boss flew back on President Eisenhower's Lockheed aircraft to Washington. They briefed Eisenhower, Nixon, and J. Edgar Hoover on the second floor of the former OSS warehouse building. The meeting was completely off the record; Eisenhower was supposed to be in bed, and no press was present.
Eisenhower had not previously known that a live alien was being held at S-4. Upon hearing the full report, Eisenhower appeared worried for the first time and ordered the information kept completely secret. The MJ-12 controllers subsequently traveled to Washington but provided only misleading information, presenting the U-2 and early SR-71 models as their primary activities.
Kewper described three separate meetings at the Oval Office during this period with Eisenhower and Nixon; the final meeting included only Hoover (without Nixon), during which Hoover appeared to treat the alien subject as a personal obsession.
Significance
If accurate, Kewper places a living non-human entity inside the S-4/Papoose Lake complex 32 years before Dan Burisch's reported first visit in 1990, extending the operational timeline of the facility into the Eisenhower era.
1998 interviews with Linda Moulton Howe
In the summer of 1998, Linda Moulton Howe spent three days and three nights at Kewper's Florida home, recording approximately 16 hours of testimony on eleven 90-minute audio tapes. He described in detail the autopsy footage of non-human intelligent beings, the craft stored inside Papoose Mountain, and a live grey being observed through a one-way mirror at S-4.
Kewper's September 1998 sketch of the being at S-4
On September 9, 1998, Kewper mailed Howe a hand-drawn sketch of the grey being he had observed at S-4, labeling the figure as having a "slim body, wearing pullover shirt." This contradicts his earlier June 1998 oral description to Howe, in which he described the being as wearing a "T-shirt with straps." The discrepancy remains unexplained. At the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure, Howe later described the being as dressed "in something like they had tried to make it look sort of American. It had on a T-shirt and as if they had put clothes on it right at the last minute for this meeting."
Shortly after Howe's visit, Kewper and his wife were confronted in a supermarket parking lot by two men who told him he had been "a loyal American" and ordered him never to speak with Howe again. He subsequently encountered two men in black suits who emerged from a black Lincoln Town Car outside a grocery store and reiterated the warning; Kewper ceased all contact with Howe at that point.
2013 deathbed confession
By early 2013, Kewper was in failing health at age 77, with kidney disease requiring blood-cleaning procedures. On March 5, 2013, Richard Dolan conducted a videotaped interview with him at an undisclosed location, titled "Deathbed Confession." Stargate Productions committed to protecting his identity until after his death.
Citizen Hearing on Disclosure
The "Deathbed Confession" video was presented as witness testimony at the May 2013 Citizen Hearing on Disclosure at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Stephen Bassett introduced the video, explaining that the witness had received death threats and remained anonymous for his family's safety. After the screening, Linda Moulton Howe and Richard Dolan provided additional context, and a Q&A followed with the panel of former members of Congress.
