Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun (23 March 1912 – 16 June 1977) was a German-American aerospace engineer and space architect, the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle that carried Apollo astronauts to the Moon. A former SS officer and key figure in Nazi Germany's V-2 rocket program at Peenemünde, he was transferred to the United States through Operation Paperclip in 1945 and became the first director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Sometimes described as the "father of space travel," "father of rocket science," or "father of the American lunar program," von Braun is also remembered for his documented awareness of slave-labor conditions at the Mittelwerk underground V-2 plant — a record substantially suppressed for decades by U.S. government sanitization of Paperclip files. In the UFO disclosure community, von Braun is additionally significant for warnings he allegedly conveyed to Carol Rosin between 1974 and 1977 — that the weaponization of space would purportedly be justified through a scripted sequence of manufactured enemies culminating in a fabricated extraterrestrial threat, a scenario she called "the last card."
Early life
Von Braun was born on 23 March 1912 in Wirsitz, Province of Posen (now Wyrzysk, Poland), the second of three sons of Magnus von Braun (senior), a Junker landowner who served as Minister of Agriculture during the Weimar Republic, and Emmy von Quistorp, descended from medieval European royalty including Philip III of France. He developed an early obsession with spaceflight after receiving a telescope at his confirmation, and at age twelve attempted to propel a toy rocket-car along a Berlin sidewalk, ending the experiment in police questioning. He attended boarding school at Ettersburg Castle in 1925, where he obtained a copy of Hermann Oberth's Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen (1923); subsequently transferred to the Hermann-Lietz-Internat on the island of Spiekeroog in 1928. Von Braun joined the Verein für Raumschiffahrt (Spaceflight Society) at the Technical University of Berlin in 1930, graduated with a mechanical engineering diploma in spring 1932, and received his doctorate in physics from the University of Berlin on 27 July 1934 under Erich Schumann. His doctoral thesis Konstruktive, theoretische und experimentelle Beiträge zu dem Problem der Flüssigkeitsrakete (16 April 1934) remained classified until 1960. By the end of 1934 his team had successfully launched two A2 liquid-fuel rockets reaching altitudes of 2.2 and 3.5 km.
Nazi rocket program
By the early 1930s von Braun was working with the German Army's rocket research program; by the late 1930s he was the technical director of the Peenemünde Army Research Center on the Baltic coast.
Nazi Party and SS membership
Von Braun applied for Nazi Party membership on 12 November 1937 and was issued membership number 5,738,692. In a 1947 statement to the U.S. War Department he later asserted he had been "officially demanded" to join in 1939 as Technical Director at Peenemünde; Neufeld notes that "von Braun, like other Peenemünders, was assigned to the local group in Karlshagen; there is no evidence that he did more than send in his monthly dues." A 1952 memoir article admitted he "fared relatively rather well under totalitarianism." A subsequent FBI examination found no derogatory information and noted that his Nazi Party involvement appeared "purely for the advancement of his academic career, or out of fear of imprisonment or execution."
He briefly attended an SS horseback-riding school in 1933 as SS-Anwärter. He joined the SS proper in spring 1940 with the rank of Untersturmführer in the Allgemeine SS (membership number 185,068), attaining ultimately the rank of Sturmbannführer (major) by June 1943. Von Braun's 1947 statement to U.S. authorities asserted that SS-Standartenführer Müller from Greifswald conveyed an order from Heinrich Himmler to join the SS, and that his military superior Walter Dornberger advised joining was necessary to continue rocket work. Von Braun stated he had worn the SS uniform only once; a 2002 BBC account from a former SS officer contradicted this claim.
V-2 development at Peenemünde
Von Braun worked closely with Hans Kammler, the SS general who oversaw both the V-2 production program and the slave-labor Mittelwerk facility tunnelled into the Harz Mountains. The V-2 assembly at Mittelwerk used prisoners from Camp Dora, and the death toll among forced laborers exceeded the number of V-2 combat casualties. Von Braun later admitted visiting Mittelwerk "on many occasions," called the conditions "repulsive," yet stated he never personally witnessed deaths or beatings — though he conceded by 1944 it was clear deaths had occurred. Guy Morand, a French resistance fighter and Dora prisoner, testified in 1995 that after an apparent sabotage incident von Braun ordered a flogging; Robert Cazabonne, another French prisoner, stated von Braun stood by as prisoners were hanged by chains suspended from cranes. The accounts have been characterized in some sources as possibly a case of mistaken identity. Adam Cabala, a Buchenwald inmate, asserted that "Prof. Wernher von Braun were aware of everything daily...not one single time did...protest...even corpses did not touch him." Konrad Dannenberg, a Nazi-party member since 1932, told the Huntsville Times that "If he had protested, he would have been shot on the spot."
Britain's Bomber Command launched a 597-bomber raid on Peenemünde on the night of 17–18 August 1943 (Operation Hydra), dropping 1,800 tons of explosives in an attempt to halt the program; engine designer Walter Thiel and Chief Engineer Walther were killed, but the underground facilities survived largely undamaged. The first successful A-4 (V-2) launch took place 3 October 1942; on 22 December 1942 Hitler ordered A-4 production as a "vengeance weapon," and on 7 July 1943 a color film presentation of the A-4 so impressed Hitler that he personally promoted von Braun to professor. The V-2 became the first artificial object to cross the Kármán line with the vertical launch of MW 18014 on 20 June 1944; the first combat V-2 was launched toward England on 7 September 1944. Doug Millard of the Science Museum, London characterized the V-2 as "a quantum leap of technological change... hugely expensive in terms of lives, with the Nazis using slave labour." Von Braun reflected later: "I have very deep and sincere regret for V-2 victims, but war is war... my duty is to help win."
Arrest by the Gestapo (1944)
Von Braun came under SD surveillance from October 1943 after Himmler began conspiring to use Kammler to gain control of all German armament programs. A young female dentist who served as an SS spy reported that von Braun, Klaus Riedel, and Helmut Gröttrup had voiced regret in early March 1944 about not working on a spaceship and about the war going badly. Coupled with allegations that they were communist sympathizers sabotaging the V-2 — and that von Braun's access to a government airplane could enable escape — these reports led to his arrest on 14 or 15 March 1944, when he was held two weeks in a Gestapo cell in Stettin without knowing the charges. Albert Speer persuaded Hitler to reinstate von Braun so the V-2 program could continue; Speer's memoir records Hitler conceding that von Braun was to be "protected from all prosecution as long as he is indispensable."
Cover-up of the rocket team's command structure
As the war collapsed in 1945, the rocket team's leadership — von Braun, Walter Dornberger, and Dornberger's chief of staff Herbert Axster — maintained a strict internal command structure and coordinated what German scientists would and would not disclose to American interrogators. According to Operation Paperclip researcher Tom Bower (cited in Jim Marrs), Peenemünde scientists who refused American contracts confided that "the rocket team's strict hierarchical structure under Dornberger, Axster, and von Braun had remained intact despite the German surrender. Before every interrogation, each German was carefully briefed by the triumvirate and their lieutenants about what could and could not be disclosed." Additionally, evidence of a conspiracy among von Braun, Dornberger, and Axster "to withhold information from U.S. officers" was uncovered by Lieutenant Walter Jessel during his 1945 investigation into how much to trust the scientists.
Surrender to the Americans
With the Soviet Army within 160 km of Peenemünde in early 1945, von Braun assembled his planning staff and decided to surrender to the Americans rather than the Soviets. Kammler ordered relocation to central Germany; conflicting army orders demanded the team fight. Von Braun fabricated documents transporting 500 affiliates to the Mittelwerk area, then dispersed the group into Bavarian villages after Kammler ordered them to Oberammergau under SS guard with execution orders if Allied capture became imminent. On 2 May 1945 his brother Magnus approached an American private from the 44th Infantry Division on a bicycle and said: "My name is Magnus von Braun. My brother invented the V-2. We want to surrender." Von Braun was at the top of the U.S. "Black List" of German scientists targeted for interrogation and was briefly detained at the "Dustbin" interrogation center at Kransberg Castle before recruitment under Operation Overcast (subsequently Operation Paperclip).
Operation Paperclip
Von Braun arrived in the United States in mid-November 1945 as part of Operation Paperclip, the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency program that brought over 700 German rocket scientists, engineers, and technicians to America. His wartime dossier was problematic: in 1947, the American military governor described him as "a potential security threat," yet only months later a revised assessment stated "he may not constitute a security threat to the U.S." — part of a systematic rewriting of Paperclip scientists' files to remove incriminating evidence of their Nazi activities. His brother Magnus von Braun, declared a "dangerous German Nazi" by counterintelligence officers, was similarly brought to America with his record expunged.
The first seven technicians arrived at New Castle Army Air Field, south of Wilmington, Delaware, on 20 September 1945, before being flown to Boston and taken by boat to Fort Strong in Boston Harbor. Except for von Braun, the men were transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland to sort the Peenemünde documents. Von Braun and the remaining staff were transferred to Fort Bliss, north of El Paso, Texas. By December 1946, the article "German Scientist Says American Cooking Tasteless..." about Walther Reidel had exposed the team's presence in the U.S., drawing public criticism from Albert Einstein and Representative John Dingell. The members called themselves "PoPs" — "Prisoners of Peace" — as their living-condition requests were rejected and rocket-development funding remained tight.
The German rocket team reconstituted at the U.S. Army's Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, effectively replicating the hierarchical organization they had maintained at Peenemünde. According to journalist Linda Hunt, NASA administrator James Webb complained during the Kennedy years that the German scientists "were circumventing the system to the extent of attempting to build their own Saturn V rocket in-house" at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
U.S. Army career and the Redstone era
Von Braun's American team participated in the Hermes program, refurbishing, assembling, and launching V-2s from Allied-occupied Germany to the White Sands Proving Ground, New Mexico. The 1950 outbreak of the Korean War precipitated his transfer to Huntsville, Alabama — his home for the next twenty years. From 1952 to 1956 von Braun led Army rocket development at Redstone Arsenal, producing the Redstone rocket — used in the first live U.S. nuclear ballistic missile tests, which von Braun personally witnessed — and the first high-precision inertial guidance system on a U.S. ballistic missile. By 1953 his title was "Chief, Guided Missiles Development Division, Redstone Arsenal." As director of the Development Operations Division of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency he developed the Jupiter-C, a modified Redstone, which became the basis for the Juno I launch vehicle that placed Explorer 1 — the first Western satellite — in orbit on 31 January 1958.
Religious conversion
For the first half of his life von Braun was a nonpracticing, perfunctory Lutheran; Stuhlinger and Ordway noted he had been known in his younger years as a "merry heathen" (fröhlicher Heide). In 1946, attending church in El Paso, Texas, he underwent religious conversion to evangelical Christianity, later joining an Episcopal congregation. Von Braun publicly spoke and wrote about science–religion complementarity, the soul's afterlife, and belief in God. He told an Assemblies of God interviewer "the farther we probe into space, the greater my faith," and met privately with Billy Graham and Martin Luther King Jr. Neufeld has argued von Braun turned to religion "to pacify his own conscience"; historian Kendrick Oliver of the University of Southampton suggested he was moved "by desire to find new direction after moral chaos" of the Third Reich.
Popularizing space exploration
On 14 May 1950 the Huntsville Times headline "Dr. von Braun Says Rocket Flights Possible to Moon" launched a wave of public exposure. Von Braun's first published crewed space-station concept appeared in the 1952 Collier's Weekly series Man Will Conquer Space Soon!, illustrated by space artist Chesley Bonestell and developed jointly with Willy Ley. The space station was a 250-foot-diameter toroid spun for artificial gravity in a 1,075-mile two-hour high-inclination orbit — built on Herman Potočnik's 1929 rotating-wheel concept and later cited as the basis for the orbital station design in 2001: A Space Odyssey. His The Mars Project (1952) outlined a fleet of ten spacecraft (3,720 metric tonnes each) carrying seventy astronauts to Mars on Hohmann transfer orbits; the related novel Project Mars: A Technical Tale was rejected by eighteen publishers and not released in full until December 2006. Von Braun served as technical director on three Walt Disney television films about space exploration; Man in Space (9 March 1955) drew an audience of 40 million.
Marsprojekt and the "Elon" prophecy
Von Braun's 1952 novel Marsprojekt (The Mars Project) depicted the leader of a Mars colonization mission bearing the title "Elon." Ian Carroll, in his March 2025 Joe Rogan Experience appearance, highlighted this as one of the more striking predictive synchronicities of recent history — given that Elon Musk subsequently founded SpaceX with the stated goal of colonizing Mars: "Werner von Braun, the Nazi who ran Operation Paperclip and became the head of NASA — a super occultist kind of stuff — wrote a novel about a guy named Elon that takes us to Mars."
NASA career
Following the 1957 launch of Sputnik 1 and the failure of the Navy's Vanguard rocket, the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Agency development team led by von Braun was transferred to NASA. Von Braun made clear in a face-to-face Pentagon meeting with Herbert York that he would go to NASA only if Saturn development continued. NASA opened the Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, on 1 July 1960; von Braun was the center's first director and held the position until 27 January 1970.
Early NASA years brought the famously failed "4 inch mission" of 21 November 1960 (Mercury-Redstone 1), in which the rocket rose four inches before settling — a power-plug malfunction triggering the launch system's safety cutoff. Mercury-Redstone 2 succeeded in January 1961, but von Braun's insistence on a further test before man-rating the Redstone has been blamed for delaying Alan Shepard's launch — the Soviets put the first man in space three weeks before Mercury-Redstone 3 flew Shepard on 5 May 1961 as Freedom 7.
The Marshall Center's first major program was development of the Saturn rocket family for heavy payloads. Von Braun initially pushed an Earth-orbit-rendezvous flight engineering concept consistent with his space-station approach, but in 1962 he converted to the lunar orbit rendezvous concept ultimately used. He worked closely with former Peenemünde teammate Kurt H. Debus, the first Kennedy Space Center director. On 16 July 1969 the Saturn V launched Apollo 11 on its eight-day mission to the Moon. Across the program the Saturn V enabled six astronaut teams to land on the lunar surface.
In summer 1966–67 von Braun participated in an Antarctic field trip organized for him and NASA management to study whether Antarctic research-station experience would inform crewed Mars missions. A 16 January 1969 internal memo confirmed he would stay as Marshall director and head the Apollo Applications Program. On 1 March 1970 he and his family relocated to Washington, D.C., where he was assigned NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning at NASA Headquarters; conflicts associated with the truncation of the Apollo program and severe budget constraints prompted his retirement from NASA on 26 May 1972.
Career after NASA
Von Braun became vice president for Engineering and Development at Fairchild Industries in Germantown, Maryland, on 1 July 1972. A 1973 routine physical diagnosed kidney cancer that proved untreatable. In 1975 he helped establish the National Space Institute (precursor to the National Space Society), serving as its first president and chairman; in 1976 he became scientific consultant to Lutz Kayser of OTRAG and a member of the Daimler-Benz board. Deteriorating health forced his retirement from Fairchild on 31 December 1976; the National Medal of Science for 1975 was awarded in early 1977 while he was hospitalized and unable to attend the White House ceremony.
It was during these final years — terminally ill and working at Fairchild — that von Braun met Carol Rosin and conveyed what she has described as his most significant warnings.
Von Braun died on 16 June 1977 in Alexandria, Virginia, of pancreatic cancer, aged 65, and was buried at Ivy Hill Cemetery.
The warning to Carol Rosin
In 1974, Carol Rosin — then a sixth-grade schoolteacher — was introduced to von Braun, who was by that time gravely ill with cancer and working at Fairchild Industries. According to Rosin's sworn testimony at the Disclosure Project's 2001 National Press Club event in Washington D.C., during their first meeting — which lasted three and a half hours — von Braun told her: "Carol, you will stop the weaponization of space."
Von Braun described to Rosin a scripted sequence of threats that would be used, one after another, to justify the permanent weaponization of space. As she recounted at the 2001 Disclosure Project event:
The first [enemy] was the Russians, which was existing at that time. Then there would be terrorists. Then there would be 3rd world countries, now we call them rogue nations or nations of concern. Then there would be asteroids. And then he would repeat to me over and over, and the last card, the last card, the last card would be the extraterrestrial threat.
Von Braun also allegedly told Rosin that the space weapons system "would never protect anyone" and was "all based on a lie," and that the intelligence community's operating formula was: "if they might have a weapon, then we have to consider that they do have these weapons — so now we have to build these weapons systems." Rosin continued to work with von Braun until his death in 1977, acting subsequently as a space law advocate and founding the Institute for Security and Cooperation in Outer Space.
Von Braun additionally described to Rosin a vision for transforming the war industry into "a global cooperative space industry" that would provide, he said, "more jobs and profits on this planet than during any hot or cold war time" — including energy technologies that could end pollution.
Steven Greer, who has cited Rosin's testimony as foundational to his own UAP disclosure advocacy, summarized the claim in a 2025 interview: "Wernher von Braun, who invented the rocket for Adolf Hitler, said on his deathbed to my friend Carol Rosin... they are going to hoax an alien attack."
Legacy and interpretation
In mainstream history, von Braun is commemorated as the architect of the Space Race's most decisive American achievement. His Nazi past — SS membership, awareness of slave-labor conditions at Mittelwerk-Dora — was substantially suppressed for decades by U.S. government sanitization of Paperclip records. The suppression was first substantially documented in Linda Hunt's 1991 Secret Agenda: The United States Government, Nazi Scientists, and Project Paperclip, 1945–1990. Time magazine in 2019 and Al Jazeera in 2013 have framed his postwar career as escaping justice for his Nazi war crimes due to American Cold War priorities.
In alternative history and conspiracy theory literature, von Braun occupies a more complex role: a man who built weapons of mass destruction for Hitler, then transferred his loyalty (and, arguably, his covert network) to the American deep state, and at the end of his life reportedly tried to warn an outsider about the ultimate deception being prepared. Research by Joseph P. Farrell in SS Brotherhood of the Bell (2006) documents the continuity of command structure among the Peenemünde rocket team inside American institutions and examines the relationship between the Nazi advanced-weapons program — centered on Hans Kammler and the Kammlerstab — and the postwar secret space program hypothesis.
Rosin's testimony remains the most-cited item in the fake alien invasion / false flag extraterrestrial literature. Critics note that it is entirely relayed through a single witness with no contemporaneous documentation; supporters point to the accuracy with which von Braun's described sequence has tracked actual SDI-era and post-9/11 geopolitical threat narratives.
